This weekend in the warm September sunshine saw three days of great racing taking place in St Aubin’s bay during the UBS Jersey Regatta.
Entrants from Guernsey, France and the UK joined in with the Jersey boats and they all made for some great competitive days racing. This is the event of the year when the Island’s three clubs, the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club, St Helier Yacht Club and St Catherine’s Sailing Club, pool their efforts and resources to produce what is undoubtedly the Island’s showpiece sailing event.
Now in it’s seventeenth year, the Jersey Regatta is being sponsored for the third year running by world-leading wealth manager UBS.
A combination of back-to-back races throughout the three days for the different classes, including dayboats, cruisers/racers, sport catamarans and open dinghys, was an amazing sight with their colourful sails complimenting Jersey’s stunning coastal scenery. Viewpoints at Noirmont point, St Aubin and Elizabeth Castle allowed spectators to join in the fun.
Racing aside, it is a great way for crews to get together and meet new friends, discuss and analyze the days racing.
The weekend started off with a welcome reception give by Bill Harris, Chairman of the Regatta, at the St Helier Yacht Club on Thursday evening before the racing commenced in earnest on Friday. The Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club at St Aubin then hosted the Commodore’s reception party on the Friday evening followed by a Regatta Party night on the Saturday. The prize giving and closing party taking place back at St Helier Yacht club.
This year, the regatta is supporting The Jubilee Sailing trust, a charity whose aim is to promote the integration of people of all physical abilities through the challenge and adventure of tall ship sailing.
