I’ve been following Wilde Thyme on Instagram for a while and Clara’s inspiring floral arrangements highlight my daily feed. So one morning when an invitation came to attend a Peony workshop I thought, why not.
Peonies have always been one of my favourite flowers and their time is so short, only six weeks a year can we bask in their gorgeousness. Local grower, Joe Friere produced these beautiful Sarah Bernhardt peonies which this year were a little late in the season due to the chilly nights we’ve been having.
The courses take place in Clara’s lovely workshop, in her garden in Trinity. Half a dozen of us gathered round to enjoy a coffee and some delicious cupcakes baked by AngelRose and to start us off Clara demonstrated the art of table decorations.
Using bits of greenery and flowers gathered from her garden she artfully filled an iron urn with seasonal flowers keeping the arrangement in a gondola shape using Jasmine to drape and bring fluidity to the shape and form.
Whilst Clara’s fingers worked their magic she told me how her passion for flowers had started in her mother’s garden. With a background in interior design in London and Jersey her flair for styling is evident. So after completing a business course at the Tallulah Rose School in the South of England she began her new career in floristry. She has since gone from strength to strength creating the most beautiful arrangements artfully arranged in her natural and individual style. Focussing on weddings and events from amazing ceiling installations to hand tied bride’s bouquets, Clara’s skill of hand and her ideas transform the beautiful flowers, colours and textures into heavenly floral loveliness.
Learning the art of hand tied bouquets
As Clara, on each turn and twist of the bunch, added the peonies and white double headed tulips making it look so easy, saying
“Place the tulips further down as they keep growing”
It was then over to us to each create our own display. I thought it had looked quite easy but I became all fingers and thumbs and had to start again several times before I was happy with my efforts. We were then shown how to wrap our beautiful flowers and finish off each bunch tied with the loveliest hand dyed green ribbon, ready to take home.
Wilde Thyme also have a range of natural wax candles, prettily packaged and named after Clara’s children and Delphi her spaniel. ‘Grace’ has the most gorgeous fragrance of peppermint, spearmint and white tea, a Mojito in a candle, with 20% of the proceeds from ‘Grace’ go to Jersey Action Against Rape. Give Clara a call if you would like one on 07797 759331.
Jersey’s beautifully peonies and tulips are still looking amazing and bring a smile to my face every time I walk past them, thank you Clara!
Clara will be holding more workshops, look out for a Christmas Wreath course. Contact her through the website for any other floral requirements.
